Pressing "E" next to it will open the dialog to drop the fuel into. There is a console right behind the cockpit seat. This will bring up an interface, where you can place your fuel. To put fuel into your ship, stand behind the cockpit at the console, and hit E. There will be six available slots for you to place fuel. To use your fuel, interact with the fuel tank in front of your ship. You can go to the moon and mine erchius fuel crystals there if you've got an environmental protection pack.
